In my own opinion mentor means someone who looks over you and how well you do. Also they help you with things you need help with, like math and stuff. For example, mentors can be an advise or to train someone, help them with what they really need help with.
Furthermore, it can be a preceptor, monitor, counselor or a tutor which are the synonyms for it. The people I consider as mentors are my teachers, some of my friends (best friends), guidance counselor, parents and people around me.
